On June 30, 1863 during its approach march to Gettysburg, the Union 2nd Corps camped at Taneytown, Maryland. Over the years this camp has yielded many relics including the button offered here.

Three-piece button in good condition. One half of the face is dark while the other still retains some gilt in the low areas. There are no cracks or dents. Eagle and state shield are clearly visible as is the word “EXCELSIOR.”

Reverse has a good shank but there is no back mark.  [ad]
