In 1913 a large camp was built to house the veterans attending the reunion marking the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The camp’s western boundary was West Confederate Ave. The McMillan house was near the center of this western boundary and it was from the roof of the McMillan barn that one of the images described below was taken. From West Confederate Ave the camp stretched to its eastern boundary along the Emmitsburg Road. North to south the camp went from the edge of the town of Gettysburg, near the present day Recreation Park, to an area just north of the Codori Farm on the Emmitsburg Road. What we offer for sale here are two panoramic photos of this camp and the all-important key showing the layout and where the veterans were housed by state. This key is only the second one we have seen in all our years of operation. It is also important to mention that these three pieces were once part of the Rosensteel Little Round Top Museum.

The first photo, as stated above, was taken from the roof of the McMillan barn looking east. The photo is framed and meas. approx. 9.50 x 53.50 inches. The black and white image is very clear with good contrast. The entire camp is seen. In the foreground there is a tree at the head of a row of tents. Under magnification you can see a sign nailed to the tree that reads “MINNESOTA.” Visible along the left edge of the photo is the town of Gettysburg. The College buildings and the Adams County Courthouse are clearly visible and help give the viewer his bearings. In the middle distance is Cemetery Hill with the New York Monument and the Soldier’s National Monument, both in the National Cemetery, clearly visible. The Bryan Farm and the top of the Pennsylvania Monument on Cemetery Ridge can also be seen in the right middle distance while far to the right are the Round Tops. In the middle distance is a railroad line with a wonderful steam engine and 9 passenger cars. This image was taken by Frank Edwards of Huntingdon, PA and is so marked in the lower left section of the photo. The condition of this image is very good.

The second photo is a little longer than the first, measuring approx. 8.00 x 60.00 inches. This is also framed and has good clarity and contrast. This view was taken from the eastern boundary of the camp looking west. Once again the whole camp is in view. As in the first photo the tents just seem to stretch on and on. In front of a row of tents in the foreground is a sign that reads “INDIANA.” Also in the foreground is the monument to the 8th Ohio that stands close to the Emmitsburg Road. To the right is the edge of the town of Gettysburg with the camp stretching out behind it. To the left are the Codori Farm buildings and a huge tent that the key says measured 400 x 175 feet. Behind this large tent, in the distance, are the woods on Seminary Ride from which Pickett’s Division emerged on the afternoon of July 3rd to begin their famous charge. Further to the right in the background is the Virginia Memorial with Gen. Lee perched atop it. In the middle distance is a railroad line with a short train of passenger cars on it. This image was taken by Losey Photographers of Indianapolis, Indiana and is so marked in the lower right section of the photo. The photo is in good condition with 2 or 3 small creases in the area of the sky. These do not detract in any way.

The third and last piece of the group is the key to the camp. This is a diagram of the layout of the camp showing the edge of town with the streets marked, the rail line servicing the camp, the distance from the camp to certain parts of the battlefield, and, most important, where the veterans from each state would be housed. Also on the map are water stations, Boy Scout and US Army locations, latrines and kitchens. The key measures approx. 33.00 x 20.00 inches and is housed in a poster frame. The item has fold creases but is overall in wonderful condition. As stated above, this is only the second key we have seen and it is in great shape. It is very clean with no rips or separations.
