Complete issue of Harper’s Weekly for August 22, 1863. Issue has 16 pages with some moderate wear on the page edges. This wear consists of minor chips and tears. First page is also loose.

The art work for this issue begins with two pieces on the front page. One shows the “Hero of Gettysburg” John Burns seated in a rocking chair with his rifle and crutches by his side. Below this is a drawing of Burns’ house that stood near the intersection of present day Chambersburg St., Springs Ave and Rout 30 West.

Also among the art work related to Gettysburg in this issue is a two page spread that shows views titled “General Meade’s Head-Quarters”, “General Lee’s Head-Quarters’, “Wheatfield in which General Reynolds was shot” (actually a view of McPherson’s Woods as viewed from the edge of an open field), “Entrance to the Cemetery”, “Barn in which Reynolds died” (actually McPherson’s farm buildings.), “Woods on the right of the Battle-field”, “College used as a Hospital for Rebel Prisoners”, Breast-works in the woods”, (actually Culp’s Hill.) “General view of Gettysburg from the West” and a view of the 12th Corps crossing the Rappahannock River.

Further on in the issue is another two page spread of artwork showing scenes around Charleston. They are titled “Advanced works of Gen. Gilmore and old lighthouse”, “Hauling Siege Guns”, “The Remains of The Keokuk”, “Digging Trenches and Mounting Gins”, “Fort Wagner from the Channel”, “Mortar Battery before Wagner” and a general view of Charleston and Morris Island.

The back part of this issue has a wonderful full-page drawing entitled “THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC-DRAWING RATIONS.” The opposite page has four portraits of Union Generals. They are Major General George Stoneman, Brigadier General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, Brigadier General John Buford and Major General Alfred Pleasonton.

All printing and artwork are readable and in good condition.
