C. 1880-1890 image which is affixed to a heavy 11” x 14” mount, with the image being just slightly smaller.  Mount is slightly curved and image has yellowed somewhat with age.  Minor corner and edge wear, otherwise in fine, clean condition.  Photographer’s mark on image at lower left, “Tipton”, and numbered “977” at lower right.  No imprints on reverse.

The battery was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by First Lieutenant Augustin N. Parsons. It brought 116 men onto the field serving six 10-pounder Parrott Rifles, and lost two killed and seven wounded. Battery A was part of the 4th Volunteer Brigade of the Army Artillery Reserve.

Dedicated in 1888, the approximately 10’ tall granite monument is located on Hancock Avenue in front of the Pennsylvania Monument.  Monument is a multi-part granite shaft topped with an incised star rotunda and ball and set on a five foot square base. The shaft has incised inscriptions. The monument marks the position taken by the Battery on July 3, 1863.  Today there is a bronze tablet with the inscription "Hexamer's Battery" covering the “Parson’s Battery” incised inscription; this tablet was added in 1890.
