TIPTON STEREOVIEW OF STRATTON STREET IN GETTYSBURG

This image is dated as having been taken in 1863, but William A. Frassanito writes in Early Photography at Gettysburg that despite the date in the caption on the photo, he believes the photograph was taken in 1867, though the view would not be significantly different than if it had been taken in 1863.  Overall in very good condition with just minor, light soiling; slight bit of wear to corners of mount.

Printed on the edges of the mount is, “W. H. TIPTON, Photo., Gettysburg, Pa.”, “Gettysburg Battlefield Views”.  Image is numbered and titled, “570 – Stratton street looking south from York street – (1863.).”

View is looking southward, uphill towards West High Street.  Muddy street with an individual on horseback in the center, a few wagons, and another individual standing on the sidewalk.  Visible in the background is the cupola of the Gettysburg Trinity United Church of Christ, which in the 1860’s was the German Reformed Church. The church has since been remodeled (1892) and a brick bell tower now stands atop the building.  At the far right of the right hand image is the bell cupola of the High Street ‘Common’ School which stands on the north side of West High St.  It and the church both served as field hospitals.

A fantastic view of the town of Gettysburg not often seen.
