This bitters bottle was purchased years ago at an auction of the Sherfy home’s contents. The Sherfy family owned the famous Peach Orchard on the Gettysburg battlefield and it was their farm over which General Barksdale’s Brigade made its charge on July 2nd 1863, engulfing the house and barn.
This bottle dates from the Civil War period. It is made of brown glass that is ribbed to look like stacked logs of a log cabin. The ridges in the telescoped neck run vertically while those of the body run horizontally. On two sides the “logs” stop short of the bottom leaving room for a label that is long gone. These short sides only have 6 “logs” instead of 17 like the other two sides. Embossed in the glass on one side of the neck is “S. T. DRAKE, 1860 PLANTATION, X BITTERS” while the opposite side reads “PATENTED 1862.”
The bottle is in excellent condition with not a mark or chip on it.
