LINCOLN AND ASSASSINATION CONSPIRATORS RELIC DISPLAY

$425.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M23375

The 11" X 14" display contains the following:  Strands of Abraham Lincoln's hair, pieces of the scaffold that the conspirators were hanged from in July 1865, and a piece of wooden wall lath board and nail that came from the home of Dr. Samuel Mudd. Dr. Mudd was the physician who set Booth's broken leg after his escape from Washington after shooting Lincoln. Herold, who accompanied Booth to Dr. Mudd's house, was later hanged with other conspirators. The display is double matted with attractive suede mat with Florentine gold trim. Letters of provenance on the hair, wood from the gallows, and lath wood accompany the display.

The wood fragments from the wooden scaffold accompanied a larger piece of wood that was salvaged as souvenirs by a guard at the prison that day, and is so documented in a copy of the contemporary note included with this display.

The piece of wall lath and nail originating from Dr. Mudd’s home is documented in a letter from the Dr. Samuel Mudd Society, also included with purchase.

These strands of President Lincoln’s hair came from locks of hair collected by Mrs. Caroline Wright, the wife of Indiana Governor Joseph A. Wright. Mrs. Wright collected hair of political figures during the latter half of the 19th Century and these were given to her after Lincoln’s inauguration in 1865 as a token of friendship between the Wrights and the Lincolns. These relics passed through the Wright family until sold with other items at Christie’s auction house in 1992. In 2002 these relics were again sold by Christie’s as a part of the Forbes Collection (Lot #121). A description of the lot is included with your purchase.
