Included are copy photos of Lincoln, the hanging scene, and a view of the reward poster for Booth and his conspirators. Burgundy suede matting with florentine gold trim. Certificate of authenticity and provenance documentation included.

On July 7, 1865 Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold and George Atzerodt were hanged from a wooden scaffold in the yard of the Old Arsenal Penitentiary in Washington, D.C. They had been found guilty as conspirators in the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln and William Seward. This fragment, along with others, accompanied a larger piece of wood scavenged from the scaffold used in the execution.  They were secured as a souvenir by a soldier acting as a guard in the 1st US Veteran Volunteers as documented in the copy of the contemporary note included in the certificate of authenticity.

The strands of Abraham Lincoln’s hair in this display originated in a lock of his hair given by Mrs. Lincoln to Mrs. Caroline Wright, the wife of former Indiana Governor Joseph Wright.  This lock was originally sold at Christie’s Auction House in 1992 along with other documents from the Wright Estate.  A copy of the auction description accompanies your purchase.
