Whiting / Washington D.C.”  Flower laid in on page opposite the title: “Taken from the White House, Jany 7 1866/ Japonica.” Plus “Sago Palm-Botonical Garden Wash., D.C. Jany 27th 1866 S.N.K. of W.C.L.”, with penciled quote from John Ruskin. Also “Pink Japonica from Maggie—January 29” 66/ Washington/DC.” Rear Eps contain mounted “Magnolia Lead from W.W. Corcorans Garden / Washington D.C., January 6, 1866’, plus a “Box from Gen. Grants Hd Qrs  / Jany 20th”66/ Wash. D.C.” Flowers solidly intact though delicate; the flowers and leaves are actually stitched to the pages with thread.

594pp., ills. Blind-stamped blue buckram covers, with raised bands & gilt cover lettering. Medium chipping & rubbing at the extremities. Else VG. The laid-in flowers from the White House and Grant’s Headquarters invite further research. An intriguing copy of US 1861 Army Regulations.
