Printed by J.G.L. Brown, Philadelphia, 1861. Top page lettering, in ink: “A. Johnston”. Interior title page inscription, in pencil: “Lieut. Alexander Johnson/ Field of Shiloh/ April 7, 1862.” Blue, blind-stamped cloth, with gilt spine adornment & lettering. 559pp., forms, pay tables, etc. Exhibits light wear at the extremities, rubbing at the head & foot. Else VG.

Research has found a Lieutenant Alexander Johnston with the 1st Ohio Infantry Infantry, an Army of Ohio unit, which fought at the Battle of Shiloh only on April 7, 1862. There is every reason to believe that this is Lt. Johnston’s book, which accompanied him through the hard fighting of that day. Invites further research.
