Front cover ink dated, “Dec. 5 1864/ C.E. Cady/ Surgeon.”, and below “G.F. Croft”. Book measures 8 x 5.5”, w/lined pages, unnumbered. Lettered leather covers, both worn and soiled. Front cover detached, chipped at spine. Text notations provide for number, name, rank, regiment, company and disease. Army entries comprise most of the book, and are cleanly entered.
Charles A. Cady enlisted on 8/20/62 as an Assistant Surgeon; on 8/23/62 he was commissioned into the 121st Pennsylvania Infantry. Resigned on 9/2/62 for promotion to Surgeon and was commissioned into the 138th Pennsylvania Infantry on 9/5/62. Mustered out 6/23/65 at Washington, D.C.
The last half dozen pages contain entries from 1867 under the name George Croft, which explains the “G.F. Croft” cover signature. How the book came into his possession is unknown. Regimental medical prescription books are extremely rare. Invites further research. Definitely a prize collectible.
