Single volume meas. approx. 3.75 x 5.50 inches. Green cloth hard cover with title embossed in gold on spine with spread-winged eagle and patriotic shield. Front and back covers have light to moderate wear and surface dirt. At center of both is a small spread-winged eagle over a patriotic shield inside of a tooled linear decoration.

The title of the volume is “U.S. INFANTRY TACTICS FOR THE INSTRUCTION, EXERCISE, AND MANEUVERS OF THE UNITED STATES INFANTRY” published by J. B. Lippincott & Co. Philadelphia, 1861. Manual runs 450 pages with several fold out plates all of which are complete. Two of the folded plates show some edge wear. The rest of the interior has darkened with age and has some light surface dirt but otherwise is good with no ripped or loose pages.

First page has large bold period ink signature that reads “C. F. BALDWIN / 1861.” The year is enclosed in a box made of ink dots.

Charles F. Baldwin was born in Brooklyn January 27, 1836. He joined Company D, of the 14th Brooklyn as a Private on April 21, 1851. He rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant and was commissioned Captain of Company D, 84th New York (14th Brooklyn) on May 18, 1861. He served with his regiment at 1st Bull Run and Rappahannock Station.

On August 29, 1862 during the battle of 2nd Bull Run Captain Baldwin was wounded to an undetermined degree. He was promoted to Major on October 1, 1862 but was discharged due to his wounds on Christmas Eve.

Major Baldwin died in Brooklyn on November 5, 1912 and is buried there in Green-Wood Cemetery. At the time of his death he was the last surviving officers of his regiment.
