$45.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 868-28

Volume meas. approx. 3.50 x 5.08 inches and runs 232 pages. Cloth covers are faded purple with minor edge wear. The spine is black cloth with the title clearly stamped in gold.

The interior is very clean and bright. All the plates are present as are the fold-out plates. Toward the back there are several pages with once dog-eared and now straightened lower corners.

The second blank page in the front of the book has a period pencil inscription that reads “ED P. CARPENTER / FOXBORO / MASS. / MAY 17/61.

There is only Edward P. Carpenter listed in the Union Army. He enlisted at St. Johnsbury, Vermont as a musician in the 5th Vermont on September 9, 1861 and was discharged on February 20, 1862. St. Johnsbury is located about 200 miles directly north of Foxboro.

Another likely candidate is Edward (no middle initial) Carpenter. He enlisted as a Sergeant in Company H, 51st Massachusetts on September 25, 1862. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on November 25, 1862 and was mustered out on July 27, 1863 at Worcester, Massachusetts. Dudley is approx. 50 miles to the west of Foxboro.

Perhaps some deeper research into these two soldiers will reveal which one owned this manual. Either way it is a nice clean volume of Hardees.
