Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 868-27

Green hard covered manual with an embossed eagle on the both front and back covers. In gold on the spine is “(BY AUTHORITY OF THE WAR DEPARTMENT MAY 1863) U.S. INFANTRY & RIFLE TACTICS” The bottom of the spine has a spread-winged eagle on a US shield.

The volume runs approx. 450 pages with advertisements for other military books on the back few pages. The manual covers the School of the Soldier, the School of the Company and the School of the Battalion. There are numerous illustrations and fold-out plates all of which are present and complete. The edge of one fold out plate is worn due to improper folding. Interior has some light staining on a few pages but is mostly clean. Binding is excellent.

Top of Preface page is stamped with a period ink stamp that reads “ROBT. A. LOVELL / U.S.A. / PERSONAL LIBRARY / NO…..”

Robert A. Lovell was the son of Charles Lovell who at the time of the Civil War was Colonel of the 18th US Infantry. Robert attended West Point and upon graduation was assigned to the 14th US Infantry with whom he served till 1890.

Inscribed in period ink inside the front cover is, “John K. Woodward / Kenyon Light Guard / 2d Lieut. / 3rd Ohio Infantry / 2d Lieut. Company C / Captain / Wm S Wing”. The Kenyon Light Guard was a short lived student military unit formed at Kenyon College, which did not see any action.  A brief internet search did not reveal Woodward in the rolls of the 3rd Ohio Infantry, a militia unit.
