Item Code: 503-32

The items in this group are ID’D to Elias B. Buck of Co. B, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry.

The first item in the group is a large, framed, full colored charcoal drawing of Buck in uniform. Framed this item meas. approx. 21.00 x 25.00 inches. The picture itself meas. approx. 15.50 x 19.50 inches. Buck is shown standing by a rail fence in front of a small camp scene with tents and cannon. He wears a forage cap, a “round-a-bout” style shell jacket with Corporal stripes, sky-blue trousers and knee-high boots. Drawing is in excellent condition. The frame has a very ornate scrollwork design around the edges and is approx. 1.75 inches deep. Glass has crack in upper right corner. Frame is original to the piece but the original backing has been replaced by foam core.

The second item in the group is another large framed piece. This is the color-lithograph Soldier’s Memorial that is often seen. It has spread winged eagle above crossed flags at top that is flanked by a naval and land battle scene. Directly below the eagle is a US shield which usually contains the Company and Regiment of the soldier but this one is blank. At center is the main text area that contains Buck’s war history. This main text area is flanked by two columns wrapped in garland and decorated with multicolored Corps badges. These columns themselves are flanked on the left by an armed sailor about to board an enemy vessel and on the right by a cavalryman in the act of mounting his horse. Bottom center has lithographed bust of President Lincoln while the very bottom has two more battle scenes as well as standing Artillery and Infantryman as well as a dedication to Mr. Buck’s children. Framed the item meas. approx. 29.00 x 35.00 inches. Walnut frame is original to the piece and is in good condition as is the memorial.

The last four items in the group are parts of Mr. Buck’s leather equipment. First is his holster. Leather is good but stiff with moderate surface crackling. There is no flaking. Leather plug in bottom of body is present. Leather latch tab is good. Holster is marked on flap “J. DAVY & CO., NEWARK, N. J.” Back of holster has signs of heavy use. Belt loop has all three rivets and is curled some. Next is a pistol cartridge box. This is in the same condition as the holster. The stiffness of the leather keeps the outer flap from closing. Box is complete and solid showing signs of heavy use. The corners of the outer flap are curled up from opening and closing and the belt loops are enlarges from wear.  Outer flap is stamped “CROSSMAN, MAKER, NEWARK N. J.” in three lines.

Next is a pair of issue saddlebags. Again, leather is stiff with some scattered heavy surface crackling but no flaking. Most of the heavy crackling is confined to the saddle strap between the two bags. Both bags are complete. All buckles appear to be present. One of the bag flaps as a more severe curl than the other. The last item is a martingale. This meas. approx. 40.00 inches long. At center is a 4.50 x 4.50 inch leather shield out lined with yellow leather. Extending from either side of this piece are two leather straps approx. 20.00 inches long and 1.50 inches wide, tapering as it moves toward the ends. There is a strip of yellow leather for decoration at center. This item is in fragile condition but is complete. Yellow leather has darkened from dirt and storage. Leather is also very dry.

The best way to cover Elias B. Buck’s wartime service is to quote from his memorial included with this group. Elias Buck enlisted June 29, 1863 in Co. G, 36th Pennsylvania for three months. This unit was called out for Lee’s invasion and after the battle the 36th was sent to Gettysburg to round up stragglers and help the wounded. Private Buck was mustered out on August 11, 1863. He enlisted again into Co. B, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry on January 22, 1864 and served with his regiment through 13 engagements in addition to Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign. He was mustered out at Cloud’s Mills on June 28, 1865. Elias’ record shows he reached the rank of Corporal during his service, however, a CDV of him that was initially with the group but has gone missing, clearly showed him with 1st Sgt. chevrons on his jacket. It is likely that he filled a 1st Sgt. billet but was never officially promoted to the position. After the war Mr. Buck served as East Hanover Township Auditor, married and had five children and died November 26, 1927.
