This item belonged to Captain Edward M. Robinson of Anson, Maine. The 27 year old enlisted as a Sergeant in Company E, 5th Maine Infantry on June 24, 1861. Robinson served with the 5th at First Bull Run and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on August 15, 1861. He then took part in the Seven Days Battles, after which he became a 1st Lieutenant on June 15, 1862 and was transferred to Company C. His regiment then went on to serve at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Salem Church. Robinson made Captain on June 15, 1863. The 5th then fought at Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House and Cold Harbor before being mustered out of service on July 27, 1864. Robinson returned to the Army as Captain of Company E, 12th Maine Infantry on February 8, 1865 and was finally mustered out on April 18, 1866. It appears he was quite active in the G.A.R. following the war.  [AS]
