Gold corps badge features blue enamel inserts, while reverse side has engraved lettering that reads, “COMMANDER 1884, PRESENTED TO PAST POST CMDR. J.C.S. BURGER, BY KIT CARSON POST NO. 2, G.A.R. MARCH 11, 1885”. All four attachment rings are present.

John C. S. Burger was born on December 26, 1840 in Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of law from Georgetown College. He enlisted at the age of 21 on August 20, 1862 at New York City as a Sergeant. On September 24, 1862 he mustered into Co. “K”, 133rd New York Infantry. He was transferred out on October 1, 1864 and transferred into 12th Infantry Veteran Reserves Corps. He was discharged on September 25, 1865. He is listed as wounded on May 25, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA. He also had service in 71st New York State Militia.

Burger died in 1912 in Washington, DC, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. His headstone notes his rank as Corporal, and “V.R.C.”
