This medal is suspended from a bar that reads "Gettysburg Veteran." An old tag comes with the group identifying it to James McLaughlin who died October 18, 1901. This is an old tag inscribed with period ink. The death date is in light pencil at bottom. Also with the group is a pre-printed American Express Co. of Togus, Maine tag that reads "From National Soldier's Home, Eastern Branch, Togus, Maine." Written on this tag in old ink is "Effects of James McLaughlin" and addressed to "Elizabeth McLaughlin Rensslar, N.Y." All items are in good condition unless otherwise described.

James McLaughlin enlisted June 21, 1861 as a Private in Company K of the 5th Pennsylvania Reserves also known as the 34th Pa. Infantry. He served with them till June 6, of 1864 when he was transferred to Company D, 191st Pa. and was finally mustered out at Washington, D.C. on June 28, 1865. An internet search shows that he did indeed die at the National Soldier's Home in Togus, Maine on October 18, 1901. Mr. McLaughlin must have been residing in New York State when he went to Gettysburg in 1893 for the dedication of the New York State Monument in the National Cemetery which would explain his New York medal when he served in a Pennsylvania Regiment.
