Nicholson, Public Printer, Washington, 1856. 117 pages plus 34 page appendix.  Covers are green cloth with gold embossed title on cover and spine. Cover is decorated with a gold embossed crossed cannon insignia. Covers show light edge wear.

Presentation inscription inside front cover in pencil, “Jn. M. Sigourney / from / Col. Craig”.  First few pages have minor light water staining, otherwise in very good, clean condition.

Henry Knox Craig enlisted as a Colonel in the US Army in 1851 and was commissioned in the Ordnance Department (with prior service in the US Army since 1812). Retired on 6/1/63. Promoted to Brig. General by Brevet on 3/13/65.

John Sigourney, born in 1862 in Herkimer County, NY, enlisted as a private in either August or September of 1861 in Scriba Twp, Oswego County, NY, and was mustered into Co. G, 147th New York Infantry.  Unsourced information found on the internet provides the following details:

- He was later promoted to corporal

- He was detailed for duty at Culpepper, VA from April 1864 to 5/9/64 when he was wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, and later transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps and was kept in various hospitals at Chestnut Hill & Alexandria until honorably discharged at Washington, D.C. on 6/27/65.

- He fought in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness Campaign and Spotsylvania.

- He was captured at Gettysburg but paroled on the field.

- Given a furlough after Gettysburg for 20 days, rejoining his command at Front Royal, VA.

Following the war he settled in Montcalm, MI, where he entered the ministry; he also owned and managed a farm. He served as the Commander of Wm. B. Stewart GAR Post #324. Sigourney died in 1895 and is buried in Burke Cemetery in Carson City, Montcalm County, MI.
