By Bvt. Lieut. Col. W.J. Hardee, formerly of the U.S. Army. Published by J.W. Tompkins & Co., Louisville, KY, 1861. Owner signature in front eps, in pencil, both volumes—“John M. Guerard/ 1861”.  Vol. 1, 250 pp., plus 43 pp. “Manual of the Piece”;  Vol. 2, 232 pp. In brown glazed cloth, 5.25 x 3.25”, w/gilt spine lettering, vol. 1 (black cloth spine reinforcement, vol. 2, w/white lettering) Both exhibit light to medium wear and rubbing at the extremities, while remaining nicely intact, w/tight page signatures and clean interior text. Else good plus.

John M. Guerard was commissioned 2nd Lieut. and mustered into Co. “D”, 1st GA infantry, 9/13/1861. He was promoted 1st Lieut., 8/5/1862, and then to Captain, transferring to GA Regular Battery “D” Light Artillery, 9/8/1863.  At some point he also had service in GA Regular Battery “A” Light Artillery; in February 1864 he wrote a report on an engagement at Olustee, dated “HDQRS. GUERARD’S LIGHT ARTILLERY, / Camp in the Field, February 22, 1864”. Serving in the Carolinas, he was surrendered  at Durham, NC, 4/26/1865.

Guerard, born in 1828 in Savannah, GA, died in September 1893 in Guyton, GA. He is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery (North) in Savannah. The larger marker over his grave reads “CAPT. JOHN M. GUERARD / GUERARD’S LIGHT BATTERY C.S.A. / 1828 – 1893”.
