Maine state seal button is nicely mounted in a display box with a printed mat. Mat shows a copy of a war time image of Bickford. Typed wording reads, “TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, THIS IS TO CERTIFY AND MAKE RECORD OF THE FACT THE ABOVE MAINE STATE BUTTON WAS REMOVED FROM THE UNIFORM OF CAPT. WM. BICKFORD, CO H 20TH MAINE. BEDFORD C. HAYES”. Mat is signed by Hayes. Display box measures 6 ¼” by 8 ¼”.

Button retains original gilt. Reverse has shank with fabric from coat still attached. Back mark reads, “SCOVILL MFG CO WATERBURY”.

William K. Bickford was a resident of Thomaston, ME. At 24 years old he enlisted on 8/29/1862 as a Sergeant and was mustered into "I" Co. ME 20th Infantry. He was discharged on 5/29/1865. Promotions: 2nd Lieut. (as of Co. H, 1863),1st Lieut. Capt. (as of Co. E, 1864). Intra Regimental Company Transfers: from Company I to Company H (1863), from Company H to Company E (1864).  [sl]
