The author was father-in-law of Confederate General JEB Stuart.

The book has a very nice period ink ID on the fifth page that reads “LIEUT. ORIN M. DEARBORN, GENL. STEVENS STAFF, JUNE 8th 1862.”

Orin Dearborn was born in Hampton, New Hampshire. He was 20 years old when he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in Company D, 3rd New Hampshire Infantry on August 23, 1861. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in Company E on June 27, 1862 and was made captain on December 15, 863. He was discharged on February 11, 1865.

While Dearborn was with the 3rd New Hampshire it saw action at Secessionville, Pocotaligo, Fort Wagner, Olustee, Drewry’s Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Fort Harrison and Fort Fisher.

How long Dearborn served on General Stevens staff is not known.

Very fine copy.  [AD]
