Very nice hardbound book published in 1872 to describe the movements and use of the sword. The book has a green cloth cover with a gold embossed oak leaf wreathe surmounted by an eagle and flags. At center of the wreath is a pair of crossed swords being supported by a gauntlet. Around the swords is the title “A NEW SYSTEM OF SWORD EXERCISE.” Beneath the wreath is the author’s name “O’ROURKE” in a riband.

The title runs 120 pages with 40 illustrations. The inside front cover has a stamp for the “MARYE LIBRARY” of Washington, D.C. and a book plate for “CAPT. W. A. MARYE, U.S. ARMY.”

The book is in good condition with a good binding. Covers show light wear.

William Augustus Marye was born in Maryland and attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point graduating in 1862. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Ordnance Department. He was promoted to Captain on May 7, 1867 and eventually rose to the rank of Colonel. He served in the Civil War, Indian Wars and Spanish American War before retiring in 1902. He died on May 13, 1903 in Washington, D.C. and is buried in Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.

Internet research turned up a photograph of Marye in his West Point uniform. This research comes with the item.
