CONFEDERATE CLOTH COVERED CANTEEN WITH SLING

$2,500.00 SOLD

Item Code: 217-220

Nice, well cared for Confederate canteen in solid and clean condition. The tin body is good with only one or two minor dents on one side. Due to the cover these dents can be felt rather than seen.

The body is covered with butternut wool cloth of a fine weave that is very clean and in remarkably good condition for its age. There is one small area of stress separations by one of the top sling keepers and another area lower down. Both areas are about 0.50 inch in size. One is hardly worth mentioning while the lower one does show a little of the canteen body underneath. Attached to the cover below the spout on one side is a small paper tag with a ballpoint ink inscription that reads “C-1, CS TIN CANTEEN W/COVER & LINEN STRAP.”

All three sling keepers are present and hold a cloth sling of blue and white bed-tick material. This sling has curled some and shows dirt and wear but is still in good shape. The cork stopper has an iron cap and pull-ring which is attached to one of the upper sling keepers by a chain that anchors in a punched hole. The canteen also retains its tin spout which has a raised lip.

There is another piece of cork rolling around inside the canteen. It does not appear to have broken off the one on the chain as that one is complete. How it got in there is anyone’s guess.
