Unique Confederate tin drum canteen in that it has a linsey-woolsey cover with “T.S. 4TH N.C.” embroidered on its face in red thread. This exact canteen appeared on page 76 of Steve Sylvia and Mike O’Donnell’s book “Civil War Canteens.”
The canteen itself is in good condition. The body is solid with no major dings or dents. The spout and one of the three sling keepers are missing. The canteen meas. approx. 6.25 inches across x 2.25 inches wide.
The cover looks to be made of three pieces of cloth, one circular piece to cover each side and a strip that goes around the edge. This edge piece is cut in three places to expose the sling loops. The cover has only two small seam separations. Both are on the same edge. One meas. approx. 1.75 inches long while the other is 1.00 inch long. These two seam splits are approx. 5.00 inches apart. The plain back of the cover has one small three-cornered hole and a cross shaped stress line. The face has single red thread lettering that meas. approx. 1.25 inches high that spell out
“T. S.
4
N. C.”
Overall the cover is a thin material but still seems very strong and sturdy for its age. It has signs of wear and stress, especially on the edge, but these are fairly stable and it does not seem likely that they will get any worse. The side with the thread inscription is near perfect.
With the canteen comes a nice brass plaque that meas. approx. 7.75 x 2.75 inches with engraved lettering that reads “CONFEDERATE CANTEEN. FLAT SIDED TIN DRUM CANTEEN 6 ¼ INCHES BY 2 ¼ INCHES, SPORTING A HOMESPUN LINSEY/WOOLSEY COVER WITH T.S. 4 N. C. STITCHED INTO IT. PG. 76 IN CANTEEN BOOK.” The plaque has the appropriate scrollwork decoration.
North Carolina had four regiments with the numeral designation “4”, a cavalry regiment and battalion and an infantry regiment and battalion. Unfortunately without a Company designation it is impossible to identify the soldier who owned this canteen. That being said this is still a rare and unusual Confederate item.
