This belt is made of a doubled over piece of khaki canvas that meas. approx. 2.50 inches wide. Attached to the body of the belt are fifty-four 2.00 inch high canvas loops for holding .45 Carbine and Rifle ammunition. One end of the belt has a heavy plain brass buckle while the other has a tongue of russet leather with six adjustment holes. The tip of the leather tongue is marked “WATERVLIET ARSENAL” in two lines. The leather surface has some light crazing. The interior surface of the belt has a separation at center that runs ¾ of the way across. Also on the interior is a stenciled name done in black ink that reads JAS. V. MACKIE Co. (B)?

The surfaces of the belt show light to moderate dirt and some minor stains. Also, several of the loops show minor fraying. This is no doubt a used item.

James V. Mackie enlisted in the Army in 1882 and was assigned to Company E, 22nd Infantry. He remained with that unit until November 24, 1887 when he was transferred to the Hospital Corps. Mackie remained in the Army until retiring on January 28, 1904. He died on December 12, 1923 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
