US MODEL 1858 SMOOTHSIDE CANTEEN WITH PARTIAL ID

$550.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M24613

Nice used condition New York Depot smoothside canteen.

The body of the canteen is in near perfect condition with only a small dent approx. 1.25 inches wide on one side. Dent is hard to see due to the quality and tightness of the brown wool cloth cover which is free from and holes or tears. Cover shows only light wear and surface dirt from age, use and storage.

The spout of the canteen is present with cork stopper, pull-ring and chain. Cork is complete and shows light wear from use.

The cloth sling is present and complete. It has curled some as is usual and has darkened with age. There are also several worn areas but none are close to splitting. All three sling keepers are present. The sling has a knot tied in it to shorten the length. This is almost always a telltale sign of canteen having been carried.

Stenciled on the sling in black lettering between the side and bottom keeper is the name “A. H. DENNETT.” Research finds two soldiers, both from Massachusetts, with this name.

First is Albert H. Dennett of Beverly who was an 18 year old mechanic. He enlisted as a Private for nine months in Company E, 8th Massachusetts Infantry on August 12, 1862 and was mustered out on August 7, 1863. During his service the 8th was assigned to duty in North Carolina.

Second is Alfred H. Dennett of West Newbury who was born on October 12, 1829. He was listed as a 36 year old carpenter when he enlisted as a Private for one year in Company M, 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery on August 20, 1864. He was mustered out on May 10, 1865. During his service the 4th served in the defenses of Washington. After the war Dennett was a member of the E. P. Wallace Post #122 of the GAR in Amesbury. He died on September 4, 1894.
