This plate has a nice bright brass face with a mellow, even patina. The detail on the eagle is very good. There is one tiny nail hole at the rim over the eagle’s head which suggests that it may have been on a “relic board” at some point in the past. The reverse has 100% of the lead fill with the two iron hooks present. Boldly stamped in the center of the lead is “BOYD & SONS BOSTON”. One of the deepest and best maker stamps I’ve seen in an accoutrement plate. Best of all, scratched into the lead around the edge is “W. Brown Co. C 17th”.
Despite the common name “Brown”, research has found only three men that meet all the criteria of first initial “W”, last name “Brown” who served in company “C” of a “17th” regiment. There are other “scratches following the “17th”, but no state designation could be determined.
The three possible owners of the plate are, 1) William Brown of Co. C, 17th New Hampshire Infantry; 2) William Brown of Co. C, 17th U.S. Infantry; or 3) Best for last, William S. Brown of Co. C, 17th Georgia Infantry who was KIA at Gettysburg!
A maker-marked breast plate, in beautiful condition with a soldier’s identification, what more could you ask for? [jet]
