Black leather water/sand “Fire” bucket with handle. Measures 12” tall and approximately 9” in diameter at the top. Bucket appears to have originally had a leather bottom held in place with a double row of stitching. At some point the bottom was replaced with a wood disc which is tacked in place. There is a rolled top edge, appears to be leather rolled over a piece of rope. A single side seam remains tight except for about 2” at the bottom.
The leather handle is mounted on two iron rings which in turn are secured to the body of the bucket. There are two poorly executed repairs (done with black electrical tape) on the handle.
The body of the bucket is painted black and remains in good condition. On the front, stenciled in white paint is, “U.S. / FORTRESS MONROE / 80”.
An interesting item from a well-known fort. [jet]
