Scarce identified Civil War hat insignia belonging to Andrew J. Davis, Adjutant of 17th Ohio and later Captain and Assistant Adjutant General. Davis enlisted at age 32 as the 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 17th Ohio on 4/27/61. This was a three-month unit that saw service in Virginia in small units guarding trains and operating against guerillas. Davis mustered out with them in August and then promptly reenlisted and was again commissioned as 1st Lieut. and Adjutant of the new 17th Ohio, which was enrolled for three years of service. During Davis’s time with the regiment they served in the Army of the Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland, taking part in the battles of Chickamauga, Stones River, and Hoover’s Gap. Davis was promoted to Captain and Assistant Adjutant General on 9/4/63. Campaigning, however, seems to have taken a toll. He resigned on 6/8/64 and died just over a year later on 6/25/65 in Ohio.
The insignia is in very good condition, is the scarce metal-backed variety, and is about 3 inches wide. The velvet is complete with no tears and just a couple of small rubs to the nap near the “U” which blend in very well. The jacqueron wire border is all there with just a little uncoiling at the upper left and a couple of stitches needed to tack it back in place at the bottom. The Old English US in the center retains its silvering and the elaborate embroidered bullion wreath has 95 percent of its muted gold color with just a couple of rubs at bottom center. The loosely woven cloth backing is complete and the two fastening loops are in place.
Davis would have qualified to have worn this both in his duty on the regimental staff of the 17th as adjutant and his later staff duty as captain and assistant adjutant general.
A rare insignia with a good identification and even some more research possibilities concerning his staff appointment. [sr]
