IDENTIFIED 188th OHIO INFANTRY CANTEEN

$450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 450-165

This regulation 1858 pattern smooth-sided canteen has a full shoulder sling and a gray wool cover that is about 95 percent intact on one side and about 80 percent on the other. One bracket is pierced for a stopper chain, characteristic of canteens supplied by contractors to the New York Depot. In this case the chain and stopper were lost and a collector replaced it for purposes of display, but there was no intention to deceive and it could be removed. The sling shows some typical rubs and abrasions from use, but is full length and rarer than the cover. Scratched into the metal spout is “S Y MARTIN” and “X’. The letter “S” is quite faint.

The canteen came from the estate of Sylvester Y. Martin, who enlisted at age 35 on 2/15/65 and mustered into Co. A of the 188th Ohio as a private on 3/2/65. Martin served until 6/19/65, when he was mustered out at Tullahoma, Tn. The regiment was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, for one year of service and was ordered to report to Gen. Thomas at Nashville, where it arrived on March 9, 1865. Thomas placed it under the command Brigadier General Van Cleve, who was responsible for the defense of Nashville and the defense of the Chattanooga Railroad. As the main avenues of communication and supply railroads were always a target for enemy raiders and partisans and the service of the regiment prevented the diversion of other regiments from the field. The 188th was ordered to Murfreesboro where it was posted for two months and then to Tullahoma for another two, during which Martin was mustered out. The regiment fortunately escaped battle casualties, but still made sacrifices, losing 45 officers and men to accidents, disease, etc.

The body of the canteen has a few dents from use in the field, but displays well and makes a good example of soldier’s essential piece of field gear.  [sr]
