The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in brown wool. The cover is complete and in fair condition with a couple of worn spots. Looks to have been stored in a damp/wet place. There are some rusty stains overall. The stitched seam has a couple of separations.
The three sling loops and spout are all present; bottom bracket heavily rusted. Stopper with ring and chain. The spout has no maker’s mark but has initials “W H” carved in. This is a New York Depot canteen and it still has an iron chain connecting the stopper to one of the side strap brackets. The chain is complete.
An original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen. It is weak and has separated in two spots and has been sewn together (recently).
This is a solid example of a Civil War smooth-side canteen. [jet]
