IDENTIFIED 144th NEW YORK CANTEEN

$550.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 480-180

This comes from a respected central New York Civil War collection and is accompanied by a signed affidavit from the soldier’s grandson dated 1986. The canteen is a NY Depot pattern, lacking stopper, chain, and sling, but with substantial remnants of its original light blue cover with the soldier’s initials stenciled in black.

The canteen was carried by David Tuttle (1832-1916,) who enlisted at Andes, NY, at the age of 31, on 8/30/64 and mustered into Co. K of the 144th New York on 9/13/64. (He shows up in the records as both “Tuttell” and “Tuttle.” The latter seems to be the correct spelling.) The regiment had entered service in Fall 1862. Posted near Washington until April 1863, it took part in the defense of Suffolk, Va., and then took part in the siege of Fort Wagner, Fort Sumter, and Charleston in South Carolina. It served briefly in Florida, before returning to Hilton Head, where Tuttle joined it. During his time with the unit they saw further action at Honey Hill, losing 108 men, and Deveaux Neck, losing 44, though there is some indication in the records he may not have joined his company until Dec. 17. Tuttle mustered out with the regiment on 6/25/65. They had lost 40 officers and men killed in action or mortally wounded during their service. Tuttle died and is buried in Livingston Manor, NY. The affidavit is signed by Clifford Tuttle, the son of David Tuttle’s youngest child, Martin.  [sr]
