Item Code: 30-1846

The blade is bright with light scattered mottling. The true edge has numerous small nicks. The false edge has two small areas of pitting. The etching is the usual decoration of scrollwork with panoply of flags and anchors. The obverse includes a spread-winged eagle with riband and the reverse has a smooth rectangle with the name “HENRY ALLEN” etched into it. All etching is faint. There is no maker’s mark on the ricasso and most of the leather washer remains under the hilt.

The grip has the usual sharkskin covering with 13 courses of single twisted wire wrap. The pommel cap is the usual Phrygian helmet design with oak leaf border with a cap consisting of a spread-winged eagle surrounded by 13 stars. The knuckle bow starts at the pommel cap and sweeps around toward the base of the grip and widens into a counterguard on each side of the grip ending in a quillion. The knuckle bow is decorated on each end with a sea serpent while the guard has the usual oak leaf design with the letters “USN” worked into it. There is a slight wiggle to the hilt overall.

No positive ID could be made on the owner of this sword however, the List of Officers of the Navy and Marine Corps from 1775 to 1900 shows three men named Henry Allen all of whom served in the Civil War.
