HANDSOME CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABRE IDENTIFIED TO THOMAS C. WEBBER, 1ST DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA CAVALRY

Inscribed on the silver plated scabbard, “Presented to T.C. Webber, by / Co. G. / 1st D.C. Cav. / February 27, 1864”. Sabre has a “W. Clauberg/Solingen” marked blade.  The cast brass grip has alternating raised plain ribs and ribs decorated with leaf & berry designs. The gilt brass guard has two branches with fancy, heavy scroll work and leaf designs between each branch. The throat and two ring mounts also have oak leaf/acorn decorations. The brass drag is heavily scroll decorated with a patriotic shield on one side.

The pommel cap is decorated on the front with a wing spread eagle with shield, arrows and a riband in his beak. Top of pommel with scroll design. Top side of guard also scroll decorated. A very handsome hilt. Silver plate is lightly tarnished.

The single edged, slightly curved blade is 34”. Decorated on both sides with scroll designs, American Eagle, fancy “US”, etc. Etching is weak at spots and overall shows use. Leather ricasso washer is intact.

Thomas C. Webber of Malden, Massachusetts mustered in at Augusta, ME on Sept. 8, 1862 as a 2nd Lt. in Company D, 8th Maine Volunteers. He mustered out of the 8th for promotion on Feb. 10, 1864 as a Captain in Co. G, 1st District of Columbia Cavalry, which consolidated with the 1st Maine Cavalry on Aug. 27, 1864. Thomas was assigned to Co. I. According to his pension file, Webber was born on Christmas Day, 1835 in Hallowell, ME. He mustered out of service on Feb. 2, 1865. He lived until 1926.

The major battles in which he would have participated are: siege and capture of Ft. Pulaski; Petersburg; Malvern Hill; Deep Bottom; Reams Station; and Sycamore Church.

A wonderful sword with a very visible inscription that catches one eye immediately. Research & records of service included.
