Etched on the blade to “Capt. M.C. Burleigh Co. C Gob’s Horse Guards”. A really handsome sabre. Brass hilt is untouched with the gilt finish covered with a thin mellow patina. The sharkskin covered grip is bound with twisted center silver wire with a single strand on either side. The steel scabbard has a chocolate brown patina. Brass ring mounts throat and drag. The 35 ¼” blade is beautifully and deeply etched with grape vines, grapes, panoply of arms, etc., and the identification in old English letters. Super Fine condition. White buff leather on blade washer intact.

Not much is known about Captain Micajah C. Burleigh. The 1860 census shows him as age 41, born in Maine about 1819 with a home in Somersworth, New Hampshire. He is married with five children. Captain Burleigh is listed as an officer of the 3^rd Company New Hampshire Governor’s Horse Guard. The Governor’s Horse Guards, whose members included past and future governors, statesmen and prominent “movers and shakers” of all New Hampshire occupations. It became defunct in 1879 and not officially dissolved until 1986.

Online research shows Burleigh as President of Somersworth Savings Bank in 1865. We also know he attended Stafford Academy and New London Academy. He left to become a sailor for 14 years ending as a Captain in command of his own s hips. He returned to South Berwick and worked at Parks Store, then at W. & E. Griffin, iron founders, where he eventually owned the business. Moving to Somersworth, NH he founded the Somersworth Machine Company and eventually purchased the Dover Iron Foundry. In the 1850’s he served as New Hampshire state representative and state senator. He dies in 1881.
