Adoniram Brown Judson (1837-1916) was born in Burma where his father was an American missionary. He studied medicine at Harvard and at Jefferson College, Philadelphia, where he graduated in 1865.

Judson enlisted as an Asst. Surgeon on 7/30/61 and was commissioned into the US Navy on that date. Promoted to Surgeon on 12/26/66. Resigned on 5/11/68.  Served on the following ships:  Mortar Flotilla, New Ironsides, USS Nantucket, the Muscoota, and the Michigan; and in the West Gulf and South Atlantic Squadrons.

After his service in the Navy during the Civil War, he settled in practice in New York, devoting himself to orthopedics. From 1878 to 1908 he was orthopedic surgeon to the out-patient department at New York Hospital. In 1887 he helped to found the American Orthopaedic Association, of which he was vice president in 1889 and president in 1890. From 1886 until his death he was statistical secretary to the New York Academy of Medicine. He was chairman of the Section of Orthopedic Surgery. Judson died Sept. 20, 1916 in New York City.

The second individual whose name is engraved on the guard, Adoniram Judson Hanna, may be an author/journalist/poet found listed variously as Judson Adoniram Hann, A. Judson Hanna, Judson A. Hanna, and Judson Hanna. Hanna was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1875, son of Tomas H. J. and Emily (Hudson) Hanna, born in British India and Burma respectively. He appears to be related in some fashion to Dr. Judson, perhaps a nephew. Hanna, a resident of Pennsylvania, served as a Sgt. in the 30th Infantry (Private at Discharge) with Detachment, PA 3rd Division during WWI, from 11/3/1917 – 8/29/1919. He died in Bucks County, PA in 1928 at the age of 52, never having married.  He is buried in Knights of Pythias Greenwood Cemetery in Philadelphia County. Further research on Hanna is certainly a possibility.

Accompanied by Judson’s military & pension records, and a brief amount of research material on Hanna.  [ss, ld]
