$4,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 909-26

This sword belonged to Captain Daniel Casey of the 29th Indiana who suffered a severe wound to his at Shiloh.

The drawn sword meas. approx. 37.50 inches from pommel to point. The blade is in first class condition. It is bright and clean with only the slightest mottling in spots. The reverse side also shows some dull, light signs of rubbing on the lower third from being drawn and returned to the scabbard over the years. The edge is free of any nicks. The blade meas. approx. 32.00 inches long with a 21.00 inch long wide fuller surmounted by a 13.75 inch narrow fuller.

The obverse side of the blade has a very pronounced etching of a spread-winged eagle in a field of scrolled foliate. Details are very crisp and even the small “E PLURIBUS UNUM” engraved on the riband in the eagles mouth is visible from a distance. The reverse ricasso is marked “CLAUBERG SOLINGEN” with the standing figure of a knight. The etching on this reverse side is just as nice as the etching on the obverse and of the same pattern but with a large “US” in place of the eagle.

The spine of the blade at the ricasso is etched “IRON PROOF.” This area of the spine also has one small ding. The original leather washer is present at the base of the blade and in very good condition.

The very decorative brass hilt is deeply cast with a detailed, single paneled guard and knucklebow. Panel is delicately cast with oak leaf scrolls and acanthus leaves. Hilt features very handsome German-silver grips, ornately embellished with detailed leaf engravings. The domed Phrygian-style pommel is heavily decorated with ornate scrollwork at the base and delicate chasing on the face. The top of pommel is heavily decorated with an ornately cast brim that when looked down on from above forms a flower. The hilt is tight and the brass has been lightly cleaned.

Bright iron scabbard is also heavily decorated and s a thing of beauty The two brass mounts are rather large and have a deeply engraved decoration of foliate. The ring mounts have heavily and deeply cast laurel leaves with both rings attached.

Between the two mounts is a wonderfully engraved rectangle with a border of scrollwork, acanthus leaves and flowers. At center of the rectangle is the presentation done in a delicate cursive that reads “PRESENTED TO CAPT. DAN CASEY BY HIS FRIENDS, NASHVILLE, MAY 24TH, 1864.” The presentation has all the usual linear embellishments.

Between the lower mount and the drag the scabbard is engraved with a spectacular spread-winged eagle with a US shield on his chest within a circle of nineteen stars with two waving US flags above and below it. This central decoration is flanked at top and bottom by 4.00 inches of scrollwork decoration. The brass drag is also heavily engraved with foliate.

Between the mounts on the reverse side of the scabbard is an engraved spread-winged eagle perched on a patriotic shield superimposed over three arrows and an olive branch. Next to this is an Irish harp in a wreath of clover. Both are well done.

Scabbard shows signs of cleaning but is in excellent condition with no dings or dents.

Daniel Casey was residing in Plymouth, Indiana when he was commissioned Captain of Company I, 29th Indiana Infantry on September 10, 1861.

The 29th Indiana saw its first action at Shiloh in April of 1862. The Weekly Republican newspaper of Plymouth, Indiana reported in its April 17, 1862 issue that Captain Casey was severely wounded in his hand.

The 29th went on to see action at Corinth, Stones River and Chickamauga and as far as is known Casey was present but his records would need to be pulled from the National Archives to know for sure.

Captain Daniel Casey was mustered out on September 27, 1864. Nothing is known of his postwar life.

Copies of internet research accompany the sword.

This is a wonderful and very attractive sword and with more research on the owner its history may well be enhanced.  [ad]
