Standard field grade cavalry officer saber by Ames.  Distinct guard with cast branches, pommel cap and eagle cast on quillion.  This guard style was distinct to Ames and was often copied by other manufacturers.  Grip is fine sharkskin with twisted wire.  Blade etch is light and blade has turned gray with some staining.  Obverse etch is Ames Mfg Co Chicopee Mass / foliate - foliate / stand of arms / eagle with E Pluribus Unum ribbon - foliate.  Reverse is foliate / US / stand of arms / foliate.  Steel scabbard is an upgrade as it is blued and has wide brass mounts and brass boot drag instead of all steel.  Mounts and drag still retain a large portion of gilt.

Top mount is inscribed: “Presented to / Capt. Ja's. Housman / By his Friends, /  Oct. 19th 1861.”

James W. Houseman [Housman] enlisted on 9/1/61 at New York City as a Captain. On 10/2/61 he was commissioned into Co. F, 2nd New York Heavy Artillery. He resigned on 2/8/62.  Rosters compiled by the New York State Adjutant General Office indicate he was born on the rolls as both Houseman and Housman.   [ld]
