[See Thillman, CIVIL WAR ARMY SWORDS, p. 452.] Maker-mark [reverse ricasso]: “Tomes & Sons/ &/ Melvain NY.” As Tomes & Sons assembled their swords from parts from various companies, this particular blade also bears and Emerson & Silver “Keystone” marking on its obverse ricasso. The semi-bright, tapering, diamond-shaped blade measures 31.25” in length, .75” in width at the base. Ding-free, the blade exhibits the standard floral spray etching on both sides, with patches of slight scratching near tip. Else VG plus.

Hilt assembly tight and symmetrical. Gilt handle displays clean medium patina, w/minor knicks on reverse counterguard. Displays standard decoration and chasing. Fine leather grip w/tight brass wrap. Scabbard is of browned steel w/brass mountings gilded and chased. Exhibits slight pitting near the drag. Else VG plus. In all, a very attractive specimen of an early war M1860 staff officers’ sword. Fine collectible.
