Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball pistol commonly referred to as the 1849 Pocket Model revolver. The personal sidearm, in good original condition throughout, is a presentation to Thomas S. Doebler. Doebler, a native of Pennsylvania, was a cadet at the United States Military Academy from July 1, 1859 until September 15, 1859. We have just cursory data on Doebler and no research has been done on him. He enlisted in the army on May 14, 1861 as a Private. He mustered into Co “E”, 14th U.S. Infantry the same day. He served with the regiment his entire tem and was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on Jun 30, 1862, 1st Lieutenant on July 31, 1863 and was discharged on Feb 25, 1865. He was late made captain by brevet on March 3, 1865.

Doebler’s Colt revolver bears all matching serial numbers of #205355 indicating production in 1862, the second year of the Civil War. Gunmetal has lost its original finish and casehardening over the years. Sidearm has been cleaned at one time. It wears a light gray patina. Octagonal barrel has moderate pitting on the upper left side and also on the cylinder in one area, likely from its storage. Revolver is mechanically strong and has crisp action. Could use a bit of lubrication. Grips are of one-piece, unvarnished walnut, strong and tight, with no trace of shrinkage. Has few, very minor wood dings from storage. Brass butt strap and trigger guard are brass and appear to have just a hint of the original silver wash. On backstrap is engraved a very clear inscription that reads “To Lieut T. S. Doebler / By His Bro U. S. D.” On the brass butt plate is another inscription that reads “Williamsport / Pa.”

Specimen features a seldom seen 6½” octagonal barrel matched to a .31 caliber, six-shot cylinder that holds just light traces of the roll pressed engraving featuring the ‘stagecoach holdup’ scene. Barrel markings exhibit “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT / NEW YORK U S AMERICA.” on top of the barrel. The standard “COLTS / PATENT” is also stamped on the left side of the frame and is strong. All frame screws are original and in very good condition. All exterior surfaces of the barrel, frame, cylinder and hammer bear very light pinprick pitting with scattered spots of oxidation. Revolver comes with cursory information on Doebler from the American Civil War Research database. This original M1849 Pocket Revolver is a great, identified Colt percussion firearm specimen.
