This is a fifth model Burnside bearing the Serial Number 32530. All iron surfaces are smooth gray with scattered pepper & patches of age staining under an old coating of dried oil. All markings typical to this model are visible except barrel markings, which are very thing but can be seen. Mechanics are crisp. Bore is strong with a dusty look. Stocks are smooth, showing a light cleaning & finish, done long ago. Some honest saddle wear is evident. Cartouches are present but thin.

20 year old George Taylor was born in Allegheny County, PA and was a glass blower by trade. He was mustered in on 10/24/62 for a period of three years as a private into Co. F, 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He is listed as a deserter from Camp Montgomery on 11/26/62. He is not listed again until he enlists in the same company & regiment on 8/25/64 for one year. Taylor is present with the regiment until he is discharged from the service on 5/30/65 at Alexandria, VA. A second muster out roll dated “Ft. Leavenworth, Kas., Aug. 24, 1865” includes the remarks, “Deserted & never returned to duty. Date not known as the original rolls were lost.” During his time in service, the 14th PA Cavalry was involved in Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign & other small actions throughout the valley.

The Burnside carbine is identified through the serial number.

Military records accompany the item, as well as a copy of the page from the ordnance records identifying the carbine to Pvt. Taylor.
