This percussion sidearm is a Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in very good overall condition. The Colt Army revolver was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War.

This government inspected sidearm is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. Grips are original one-piece walnut in very good condition and exhibit two thin government inspector’s cartouches. Specimen has all matching serial numbers 129267. All gun metal exhibits a pleasing dusky dark gray finish with scattered spots of dark oxidation overall. No original case colors on the frame or hammer but there is a bit on the loading lever. Sidearm has a brass trigger guard and steel backstrap. Wedge is an original and bears the last four digits of # 9267.

Weapon is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and a small notch in the backstop indicating a martial arm. Barrel address is on the top of barrel reads “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK AMERICA” is strong. Approx. 85% of the cylinder scene remains visible. The revolver mechanics exhibit strong indexing and works well. All nipples are original. “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame is clear and sharp.

From the serial number it appears that this Colt was produced late in 1863.

This weapon is identified by serial number to Corporal Jacob Fix, Company B, 4th Kentucky Cavalry.

Jacob Fix was born in Germany and came to the United States around 1858. He enlisted in Louisville, Kentucky as a Corporal on November 10, 1861. He served with his regiment throughout the war becoming a reenlisted veteran on January 1, 1864. Fix was present until December of 1864 when he became ill and was sent to General Hospital #19 in Nashville, Tennessee. He returned to his regiment in July of 1865 and was mustered out on August 21, 1865 at Macon, Georgia.

The 4th Kentucky Cavalry served in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. The biggest actions they were in were Stone’s River and Chickamauga with their heaviest loss coming at a place called Crawfish Springs in Georgia where they lost 1 killed, 1 wounded and 66 captured.

With the pistol are military and pension records as well as the ordnance record showing that this weapon was issued to Corporal Fix.
