POST-CIVIL WAR SMITH & WESSON POCKET REVOLVER ID’D TO AN ILLINOIS VETERAN

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 30-1998

This is a Smith & Wesson, No. 1, 3rd issue, pocket revolver. It fired a .22 caliber “short” rimfire cartridge.  It’s the third and final version of Smith & Wesson's No. 1 pocket model...the company's first revolver introduced in 1857.  The third model was built from 1868-1881 and while the same mechanically, it uses a more stream-lined exterior with a round barrel, fluted cylinder, and rounded birdshead grip. This revolver is serial number 2641, so was manufactured in the early years of that time frame. It is engraved on the backstrap “Wm. P. Follansbe.” Revolver is in good condition but no original bluing remains. Overall is bears a tarnished silver appearance. The stamp on top of the barrel reads “SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” followed by three patent dates. The Rosewood grips are in good condition with light wear to bottom edge. Breakdown mechanism works smoothly and action is good.

The owner of this revolver was William Pitt Follansbee who was a member of the 1st Illinois Light Artillery for three years. Revolver comes with research on Follansbee.  [jet]
