VERY FINE MODEL 1861 BRIDESBURG MUSKET, PRESENTED TO PHILADELPHIA WAR FINANCIER

$3,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-3818

This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket, dated 1862, is in complete, very fine condition. Produced at the Alfred Jenks & Co facility in Bridesburg, PA, the musket retains its original stock, iron nipple and bolster screw, swell-shaped ramrod, barrel bands, and sling swivels. The 40” long barrel and all gun metal is clean and in excellent condition and wear a pleasing, smooth light gray sheen. Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / BRIDESBURG / 1862” in front of the hammer. A sharp and detailed spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. Steel butt plate strongly stamped with “US”. Has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel bore is clean with strong rifling. All screws, even the bolster screw, are excellent with no buggering. Mechanics are crisp. Black walnut stock is in excellent condition overall. No cracks or blemishes in the wood save some tiny dings from age and storage. There are no government proof marks or cartouches on this weapon. Iron trigger guard backstrap is engraved “Jay Cooke” in fine script.

The nearly unfired condition of this gun, the lack of proof marks, and the fancy engraved name lead us to believe this weapon was pulled from the production line and presented to Mr. Jay Cooke (1821-1905) who was a Philadelphia banker and financier of the Civil War. Jay Cooke & Company loaned $3,000,000 to the State of Pennsylvania at the beginning of the war and worked closely with Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase to secure loans and sell Treasury notes to pay for the Northern war effort.

An excellent condition Bridesburg (Philadelphia) musket owned by an important Philadelphia banker and financier of the Civil War.  [jet]
