Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball pistol commonly referred to as the 1849 Pocket Model Revolver. This personal sidearm, in good, original condition throughout, bears all matching serial numbers of #187535 indicating a production time of mid-1861. All gunmetal bears a uniform dark color. Revolver is mechanically sound with crisp action. Octagonal barrel has small patches of fine pitting. Nice one-piece walnut grips with almost all original varnish. Shows very slight edge wear at the butt. No trace of the silver wash seen in the trigger guard. The butt of the brass backstrap is engraved “A.S. Young, Lowell, Mass”. Artemus S. Young is listed in the 1860 census. Age 31, and living in Lowell, Mass. No military records were found for him.

This Colt handgun features a five-inch long barrel matched to a .31 caliber, six-shot cylinder that retains a faint traces of the roll pressed engraving featuring the ‘stagecoach holdup’ scene. All nipples strong and unbroken. Cylinder safety pins all hammered down. All serial numbers match, including loading lever, barrel, cylinder, frame, triggerguard, and buttstrap. Wedge is unmarked. A clear “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” marks the top flat of barrel. The tail end of “America” is worn. Wear to the left-edge letters of the standard “COLTS / PATENT” stamp on the left side of the frame. Some screw heads show wear.

This revolver was used and shows honest wear, but is a very nice example of a Colt pistol manufactured in 1861.  [jet]
