Identification confirmed by revolver serial no. “3449” listed in Ranneburger’s name in Company “B” Order Book, 10th Illinois Cavalry.

All metal parts exhibit moderate to heavy pitting, while retaining a pleasing, plum colored patina. Remington barrel markings legible, as is the under-barrel serial number. Sub-inspector markings present, although the left grip inspector’s cartouche has been worn off. Crisp “Action and cylinder indexing crisp. Fine trigger mechanism. All cylinder nipples present and in good condition. Barrel bore dusty and pitted. Walnut grips worn, w minor dents & dings . right grip exhibits .5” chip in lower rear corner. All in all, in appearance and with its fine action, this piece is tight, crisp, and, though weathered, “righteous” attractive. and crisp.

At the time of his enlistment and mustering into Co. “B”, 10th Illinois, Joseph Ranneburger was a 20 year old farmer from Springfield. He was described at enlistment as: 5’10” in height, fair complexion, hazel eyes, with black hair. Mustered on 10/01/ 1863 in Little rock, Ark., he was at some point promoted to Corporal, and discharged at that rank, 11/22/1865, in San Antonio, TX.

The 10th Illinois Cavalry was mustered into service, 11/25/1861. Its service was exclusively in the Trans-Mississippi Department, and primarily in the State of Arkansas., where 10th participated in the Battle of Prairie Grove, Ark., Dec. 1862. Throughout and to the end it was involved in many marches and sharp skirmishes with Confederate cavalry. By the time Joseph Ranneburger joined the regiment, their primary opponent were the troopers of Gen. Jo. Shelby.

A solidly ID’D, Union Cavalry piece. Solidly collectible. Accompanied by military and pension records from the National Archives, along with the page from the Company Order Book confirming the serial number identification.  [jp]
