Item Code: B4797

“The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ...” Published by the American Bible Society, New York, 1862.  316pp., brown blindstamped covers. Exhibits wear & rubbing at the extremities. Spine covering gone, while text signatures remain tight and intact. Interior text yellowed but entirely legible.

Front eps owner form, which reads as follows:  “Bible House ___/ From the Maryland _____ Bible ___/ To [ink] George E. Parsons soldier  in the 49th Regiment, Company E, of  Pennsylvania Volunteers./  Should I die on the battle field or in Hospital, for the sake of humanity, acquaint my wife of it….[ink] residing at Lewistown.. of the fact, and where my remains may be found.”  Also in the front EPs, in ink, is the name of “R[obert] Reeder”, also a member of Co. “E”, 49th PA Infantry, who went on serve in two other regiments during the Civil War. It is possible that upon his discharge from the army in 1864, George Parsons bequeathed this bible to Robert Reeder. In any case, this is an interesting bible with a 49th PA pedigree that invites further research.
