FULL COLOR SOLDIER’S MEMORIAL FOR THE 23RD MASSACHUSETTS INFANTRY

This full color lithograph memorial was printed in July of 1862. Across the top in a blue sky id a spread-winged eagle on a perch flanked by four US flags which are in turned flanked on one side by a soldier on guard in a camp and by a Color-Guard marching into battle on the other. A scrollwork design separates the main body of the piece in three columns. The center column has “23D REGIMENT MASS. VOL. INFANTRY” and then lists the regimental staff. Below this is another heading that reads “COMPANY E.” The rest of the central column and the two that flank it then list the names of the men in the Company along with information as to those killed, wounded, discharged etc… At bottom center is a US shield and scroll design in which is the organizational dates relating to the regiment. This is flanked by figures of Columbia and Victory. This is in turn flanked by two scenes of soldiers returning home. Along the left bottom edge is a list of the regiment’s battles as of the time the memorial was printed. The battles listed are Roanoke Island, New Berne, South-West Creek, Kinston, Whitehall and Goldsboro.

There is some wrinkling along the top and bottom edges and there is a tape repair at the top. The colors on the piece are excellent. The item comes in a modern mat and frame. Overall measurements are 22.00 x 27.00 inches.

The 23rd Massachusetts Infantry was raised in the fall of 1861 and sent to North Carolina where it served with the 18th Corps. The regiment served with their Corps in North Carolina and later in Virginia. Besides the battles listed on the memorial they were also engaged at Quaker’s Bridge, Wren’s Mill, Arrowfield Church, Drury’s Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Kinston. During its service the regiment lost 340 men killed wounded and captured and another 132 by disease. The regiment was mustered out on June 25, 1865.
