Very nice coin silver ID badge in the shape of an acorn representing the 14th Army Corps. The face is delicately engraved with “J.C.M. 75th IND” in two lines. The face of the badge is smooth and devoid of any decoration other than underlining of the letters. The reverse has a T-bar pin that is slightly bent.
The ID tag belonged to James C. Medsker of Kokomo, Indiana who was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company C, 75th Indiana on July 28, 1862. A little less than a month later on August 20th Medsker was appointed Adjutant.
The 75th was sent to Kentucky to chase John Morgan before being assigned to the 14th Corps near Murfreesboro in January of 1863. The regiment saw its first action at Hoover’s Gap in June of 1863. It later served at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta. Medsker was mustered out on June 8, 1865 at Washington, D. C.
With the item is a small packet of internet research and a copy of an internet photo of Medsker.
